Veo Observer Wireless Firmware upgrade

Veo silently upgraded the firmware of the Veo Observer Wireless Network Camera. On their website at http://www.veo.com/Observer-Wireless/firmware.asp there is version 416 of the firmware available (the latest public version was 300).

The release notes mention a number of fixes including: “Additional code added to make the camera more stable.”. Let’s hope that this is true – it has happened more than once that the camera locked up and that I saw it pointing to the ceiling in the morning with the motor running for hours.

I also checked the Veo.pm perl module and everything seems to work with the upgraded firmware.

I updated my wired veo cam to 4.16 (with the wired updater), but the perl module no longer completely works. With the streaming example, it grabs one image, then hangs. I haven’t investigated further, but its on my “list” for today.

Have you made any changes to Veo.pm since the version posted on the previous entry?

  • Matt Says:

I cannot find the firmware version 416 on the posted URL above… any idea where they are hiding it?

  • Gaz Says:

Sure, you’ll find it in ftp://209.133.92.110/

    the name is 602v_fw_v416.zip
(It’s the official VEO ftp site…)

    Ciao

I also have wired Veo with firmware 416. I have the hang problem when I use the script which capture 10 images. So I used the perl debugger and then it is ok. So it let me think there is some timing problem.

Now I added sleep 1 after selectStream() and before the stream(). It seems to work after half a dozen try.

  • nick Says:

The zip mentioned seems to be passworded – anyone know what the password is?

  • Shhh...don't tell Says:

I had to run a password cracker, but turns out the password was obvious. for the 601v fw the password is wired and the 602v fw the password is wireless. be sure to install the right firmware. 601 is wired and 602 is wireless

  • AMTC Says:

Does anyone know what’s up with VEO????, I can write a book about the many failed attempts I have made in trying to reach them in every way possible!!!! My cam is DEAD and I need an RMA no. for it so I can send it back to get fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

  • blakebart Says:

Had to use the following address to get to the firmware file for the Observer:

http://www.veo.com/ftp/601v_fw_v416.zip for the wired version and

    http://www.veo.com/ftp/602v_fw_v416.zip for the wireless version.

Not sure why Veo has removed the links from their website. Remember what Shhh…don’t tell said: when Winzip tries to open the package, it will ask for a password which is “wired” for the 601v and “wireless” for the 602v. Thanks Shhh…don’t tell!

Can someone help me. I have a Veo Observer that I cannot reset the password. Pressing the power button for 6 seconds or longer does not work.
Is there another master to overwrite this?.

The pan and tilt on one of the cams is also not working. I am sure his is a common problem is there a fix for this?.

How do you load the java or perl programs. I am no programer but would like the features that they would offer. Is there a download for a self extracting program somewhere?.

    Thanks for the help

Some news on Veo. As other people have posted, it seems that the US company, if not the Taiwan parent, is dead and gone. There is a surplus store in Sacramento with bins of RMA’d cameras, new boards, parts, camera modules, etc. I bought 4 Observers for $5 each marked “defective motors, return to Horng” that work fine (except for the motors). If anyone is interested, it’s Ali’s Surplus Stuff, 916-381-8304. Ali told me that someone bought the Veo name at the bankruptcy auction for $60,000 in order to pursue some legal actions against some Taiwanese or Chinese company, who knows. Wonder who is maintaining their web site.

I have the observer and i need to update firmware from v278 to v296 but can not find the firmware i am looking for. can some one help

  • jure Says:

    One question:

as I was looking for a solution, I stumbled on a manual on homelogic’s site (http://www.homelogic.com/pdfs/notes/veo.pdf), where I saw a screenshot of a Veo observer setup utility with a version number V 5.93S.IP.W. Does anybody have any idea, where to find that? I think it is worh a shot, and try to login to the camera with it…

  • jure Says:

    Oh, Shawn,
…the above mentioned pdf also has a link to, what’s supposed to be firmware v296, but be careful! ;)

  • paul Says:

Well I cant access a new camera after updating to 416. I just purchased this brand new camera from ebay, I guess I will return it for an exchange.

I have 5.8 observer setup at my site along with some bin files

  • wrybread Says:

Apparently veo’s website is dead and gone, and I’m having a problem where it won’t let me make any changes to the camera, keeps saying “can’t communicate with the camera, please update firmware first”. I’m already on v416, and it was working fine, not sure what happened. I’ve done a hard reset.

Anyone have the firmware file? Please email wrybread @ gmail dot you know what if so.

Also, if anyone knows anything about communicating with this camera from Python, would be very interested…

  • Zsolt Says:

I have found the firmware. Here is the URL: http://www.demalaga.com/descargas/C%C3%A1maras%20IP/Veo/
If anyone knows what happened to Veo’s website and why my camera’s firmware got corrupted approximately the same time as the website dissapeared I would be very interested to know.

  • Tobiassie Says:

I haven’t got any serial (RS232) cable bundled by my wireless camera. Has anyone got any idea where I can get it? Veo’s site is down so I don’t have anything to hold on to.

Well no one has seemed to figured out our delimna, so I guess its time for me to get out my electrical engineering cap and start looking throught some docs on teh chips use. I thing I found this far is a 10 port connector inside that can be used to program the PIC, which i what I beleive to be causing the issue. NOt 100% sure, but I just started loking at this in detail. I may purchase a programmer if I have to.
