Let’s make a book

A few weeks ago I learned about an exciting offer from mypublisher.com: they had a new line of books, which allowed for full-bleed 16″ x 12″ pages (see Deluxe Books at mypublisher.com - and don’t be fooled by the photo of the model holding the book: she’s either tiny or they took a bigger size book).

I thought I give it a try. I took 40 Pia-pictures - a few from every month of her first year. All photos got resized to 16″ width and 12″ height at 150dpi (per the recommmendation at the mypublisher.com site) and converted to black & white. I used the MyPublisher Bookmaker application (a free download at the site) to create the individual book pages. Once I was done, the pages were uploaded to the site, I selected finishing options and got a notification that my book was being prepared.

About a week later I found the book in our mailbox and was pleasantly surprised by the final result. If there was one thing I didn’t like then it would be the black-level of all photos: I have a calibrated system at home and took extra care during the converstion to black & white - still all photos seem to show a faint blueish tone in the blacks.

This was supposed to be a christmas present for Candice, but I’m really, really bad with secrets/surprises and when I saw the result I could not hide it from her. And to show you want we can see, I uploaded a PDF document to kahunaburger with the result (this is not exactly as it appears in the book). You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view the PDF document below. Here are the first five pages as thumbnails in the Acrobat Reader:

The final PDF document is here: and_then_there_were_three.pdf (PDF:3.5 MB)

Happy Holidays!

Santa Train Ride

On Sunday we did something that usually only tourists do in this town: the three of us went for a train ride.

Santa Fe Southern Railway offers train rides from Santa Fe towards Lamy almost every day. Throughout the year they also have some “themed” rides. We took the one on Sunday just after lunch which was labelled “Caroling and Santa Train”. Some of our baby-friends went along for the ride and it was really a lot of fun.

We had Santa running around on the train, taking pictures and giving presents to the kids. A guy with his guitar was playing christmas songs and encouraging people to join in.

All the babies liked the action and the special attention they got. It was also nice enough to stand on the open car of the train which allowed us to get some fresh air.

Caching RSS Proxy in perl

Just recently somebody asked me how I would go about creating a caching RSS proxy and here’s one potential solution to the problem. All it requires is a web server, some perl and access to a mysql database.

What a trooper!

And I thought I was done with kahunaburger.com entries for today. But then Candice comes home with Pia and shows me the small wound over her right eye. The whole car (with the door open) moved towards them and the door hit Pia next to the eyebrow just as they were ready to get into the car. Well, actually, it could be that Pia hit the door while mommy was carrying her, but we are not too sure anymore. Anyway, baby was a trooper and nothing, not even a some blood, would stop her from having a bath.

Cabo San Lucas Thanksgiving

This baby is quite the traveller already. Thanksgiving we were invited to Cabo San Lucas again (see also the March trip here). We met Betty, Jim, Pam and soon-to-be-husband Edwin at the grandparents time share at Playa Grande. What a difference a few months made for the little peanut. She loved the swimming pool and spent hours walking back and forth in the water.

And because I’m late with the pictures, I’m not going on with more details about the trip, but present to you, the photos from the Thanksgiving week (note that those were taken with the little Sony Digital Elph, because daddy did not bring the big gear :).
