Moscow Dungeons

There are some pretty nice HDR photos of the Moscow Underground over at englishrussia.com. Given that the guy who did the photos is the official photographer for the Moscow Underground, you get to see areas that mere mortals usually can’t get access to. Makes me want to do some more HDRs …

Saturday Morning Walk

When Pia was here this weekend we went for a walk with the dogs on Saturday. I can’t believe how much the little one grows these days: her fingers, her toes, everything seems to change shape almost every day. I think if I did a few-hours-time-lapse of her body one would literally be able to see her grow.

First stop on our walks is always “the tunnel”. It’s a duct that sends the water from a small arroyo under our drive-way. It’s big enough for Pia to walk through and she has to do it every time we go for a walk. Funny thing is that she always peeks into the duct and announces “no coyotes in there!” before she makes her way through it:

Second stop on the walk is the little hill at the beginning of our property. Again, she has to climb up there and run down with a long and loud “weeeeee ….”:

And let’s not forget some dog-action. Max loves to play with sticks. The bigger the better. While walking Pia always looks for big sticks - actually make that branches - and then screams for Max to come and get it. This time she found a pretty big and actually had trouble holding it, because it was so heavy. You can also tell that it was freezing that day.

Ortiz mountains from Fridgehenge

Yesterday afternoon I went up to Fridgehenge (or Stonefridge) and took some photos of the Ortiz mountains. I quickly assembled them in Photoshop (and no, that’s not proper stitching) and sent them to Miss M. I thought it actually looked cool. Here’s the result. Click on the image to get a larger version and do scroll to the right. Too bad that it was hazy, cloudy, dusty and bad light in general.

Hello, hello - this is the German Coast Guard …

This arrived via email this morning (thanks Georg). The guy in the beginning explains all the equipment to the newcomer … hilarious!

BrainPOP - something to bookmark

I don’t remember how exactly I ended up at www.brainpop.com, but I immediately liked what I saw.

BrainPOP

BrainPOP offers quite a collection of Flash movies that introduce kids to all sorts of subjects ranging from Arts and Crafts over Math, Science all the way to Social Studies and Health. I looked at a few of the free animations and they are really well crafted and explain the matter in simple terms. Just take a look at the sample Math-animation that talks about the Fibonacci sequence.
Besides the free lessons they also have a subscription option that allows access to every single animated educational video.

Going to keep that bookmarked and will run a few lessons by Pia later on …

Puzzle and balloons

Pia loves to do puzzles these days - jigsaw puzzles. Almost every morning she spends about half an hour making puzzles in the kitchen area while I prepare her breakfast and lunch.

This was taken this morning after she finished her life-sized Sesamestreet-puzzle the second time:

After breakfast and walking the dogs, the two of us went to town to run some errands. We went to Michael’s to look for some iron-on patches for daddy’s jeans (perhaps it’s time to buy some new ones?) - while there we discovered a whole rack of toys on sale. Among those toys was a bag of those long balloons that can be twisted into different shapes. Who would have thought that those were the best five dollars spent today. When we came home, I twisted some of them into the shape of swords and a few others were turned into necklaces/hats. And for the next 30 minutes we ran around the house fighting and pretending to be pirates …. “Arrrrrrrr”!

Last snow?

That was the situation just outside my office yesterday morning at about 8am. All the snow on the canales came down within about 3 hrs.
After 40-50 degrees today, most of the white mess is gone. If I was religious, I would pray right now that this was it. Keeping my fingers crossed …

Señor Lucky’s suddenly quits

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Señor Lucky’s, one of the favorite watering holes in Santa Fe, suddenly shuts down.
I talked to Ursula yesterday when I heard about the news. She was supposed to host the weekly Thursday-Karaoke night at Lucky’s and got word that the place has been shut down.
No announcement of the shut-down and even employees did not know that the place had closed when they showed up for work on Thursday morning. This all sounds a bit fishy to me. However, it’s a great opportunity to bring back the original Palace restaurant, which was one of my favorites in town.

Farewell Tina …

Tina in her favorite position in 2001

Just an hour ago I received word from my parents that their dog Tina is no more. Tina was a black “Schnauzer” and had been with my parents for the last 15 years. That is way more than the “normal” life expectancy of this breed (usually around 12 years). Over the past few years she had become a really old lady, but she still had days/weeks where she was fine and behaved like a young one. Things got worse in the last months and besides not being able to see 100%, she also suffered from temporary incontinence and had troubles moving around in the house (my parents home is split-level, which means there are a lot of stairs to climb). This afternoon my parents decided to end her suffering and asked the vet to put her down.

It always tears me apart when I hear of the death of a dog. They ask for nothing and give everything, unconditionally.

Rest in peace, Tina - I know you’ll be running over green fields, chasing rabbits and eating yummy food from now on until eternity.

Enuff already!

I usually try to avoid the f-word on kahunaburger, but now is a good time to use it! I f-ing hate all the snow. We had enough. The reservoirs are full. Don’t bug us anymore. Thanks for your services - see you next year!

Yesterday and today it snowed again. Just in the last 2 hrs it dumped about 2 inches of snow and that probably means that the town will be on a standstill tomorrow morning.

Sigh … I really want spring to come. Even Pia sits in the car and asks when we can finally go back to the pool.

At least there was some sunshine in the backyard this afternoon …
