Around noon we went to town, picked up Michele and then headed towards Cerrillos (Hwy 14). About half-way to Cerrillos we stopped at San Marcos Cafe for lunch. This is one of the gems in this area. If you have not been there for breakfast/lunch, make sure you check them out (the Cinnamon Rolls are to die for - we did not have them this time). Also make sure you arrive before 2pm, otherwise they won’t seat you anymore.
The food and heat had its effect on Pia and right after going back into the car she doze off. Instead of going directly to Cerrillos, we headed over to Madrid for some coffee, while Pia was sleeping in the car. The quaint little town was bustling with tourists and locals yesterday. I’ve never seen so many people there at the same time.
A little while later we went back to Cerrillos right to the Casa Grande Trading Post. The guys at the trading post were smart enough to have some goats, Llamas, pigeons and roosters in their backyard and call the whole thing a “Petting Zoo”. Not a lot of petting going on unless you go into the store and buy a small bag of food for the animals. Inside the store we also selected some “special rocks” (they have tons of “normal”, semi-precious and precious stones in there to chose from) to take home.
The part that Pia enjoyed the most was climbing on the fence at the overlook:

Cerrillos: Casa Grande Trading Post

We completed the circle by driving back through Waldo Canyon. The road hits I-25 after a few miles, which brings you back to Santa Fe. While in the Canyon, we stopped at a shale-rock-formation that I had explored in the past. Pia practiced her rock-throwing skills and of course managed to hit daddy with a huge boulder on the right side of this head. Headache for the rest of the afternoon/evening …
