Question for the day: Leave it open or close it?

I open the refigerator to get some creamer for my coffee. I’m standing next to the refrigerator, coffee cup within reach, open the door, get the creamer, pour it into the cup, put creamer back in the refrigerator and then close the door again. The whole process takes about 10-15 secs.

The important question for the day: Should I close the refrigerator after getting the creamer? Or should I leave the door open for the 10-15 secs? Background for the question is a piece of information that I read a long time ago: by opening the refrigerator you generate a suction-effect, which sucks cold air from the refrigerator. I’m wondering if I waste more energy by reopening the door or by leaving it open.

What’s your thought?

This sounds like a question for Mythbusters. I started turning off lights when I leave rooms, even briefly, because they determined that unless you’re really coming right back to the room, it’s cheaper to turn the lights off.

A-ha!!! Very good question. I ran it by Pierre, mastermind extraordinaire, informed consumer, so green-minded I think he is a plant….He is stumped. He is pacing. He is floundering because he thinks I know the answer. Right now he is talking about mass and ventilation, but I don’t think he knows the answer. We’re into 2-minutes of a soliloquoy right now. Final answer (guess): keep it open, no, it doesn’t matter. I agree that this is one for Mythbusters. Which reminds me: did you see the episode on toothbrushes in the bathroom? Eye-opening.
