Sunset at Page Mill Road

Even if I said that I did not feel at home in California, there was a lot to like about it.

One area especially has captured a permanent spot in my brain and heart: Page Mill Road. The road starts in the busy urban areas of Silicon Valley. Soon after passing I-280 it turns into a twisting roller-coaster that is a heck of a lot of fun to drive (the Audi TT loved it). After a few miles the residential areas have disappeared and you’re left with wide open spaces. The first time I drove it, I could not believe that this natural beauty was so close to the busy high-tech areas. At it’s highest point, there are a number of public Open Space Preserves (Monte Bello and Los Trancos among them).

I lost track how often I went up there by myself and with others. Most of the time I took my camera with me, because the views up there are spectacular. This is especially true when thick layers of clouds roll in from the Ocean. While the lower area to west, including the coast, is under thick heavy clouds, you end up quite often above the fluffy layers, surrounded by a sea of clouds. Here’s one example of a sunset at the peak of one of the Los Trancos hills:

If you are in the valley or just visit and need to get away from all the craziness, go up there and it’ll clear your mind.
