Santa Fe City Council approves controversial “Tourist Tax”
Well, it had to happen sooner or later: The Santa Fe New Mexican reports today that the Santa Fe City Council voted unanimously on Monday 3/31 on a resolution to establish a city-wide “Tourist Tax”. Beginning July 1st all visitors to Santa Fe hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs will be assessed the tax. Residents will need to show their driver’s licenses to have the 12% tax waived from their bills.
I don’t know how you feel about this, but I think it’s a step in the right direction to get some more cash for much needed city projects (Guadalupe Street - hint, hint!). And I’m not surprised to see the outrage expressed by tourist in this SF Reporter interview on the streets of Santa Fe earlier this week: 3/30 - SF Reporter interviews tourists on the Plaza
There was a time when Candice wanted to borrow my driver’s license (I’m sure not for ill intent (harharhar)), maybe I’ll have to borrow hers the next time I’m in Santa Fe.
