Thank you Mr. Cameron
If you follow kahunaburger on a semi-regular basis, you will know by now that I’m no longer a fan of movie theaters. Tickets/food/drinks too expensive, too loud and, on top of that, they show crap. I did not see any of the big Hollywood productions over the past years in a movie theater, because I did not think they were worth it. Instead I waited for them to appear on Netflix, which was good enough for me (and allowed me to control the volume).
Some people recently suggested that Avatar may be a different beast and worth the trip to the multiplex. Come Friday evening I ventured down to Regal’s Stadium 14 at the end of Cerrillos Road, purchased a $13.50 ticket, a $5.00 drink and sat down to find out whether it was really worth it.
It was. Totally.
Yes, it’s cheesy at times and it has typical American movie themes in it, but those annoying pieces are surrounded by a visually and intellectually stunning story. I know a thing or two about computer graphics and I was blown away with some of the visuals in the movie. Even more so, the transition from the “real” world to the “avatar” world happens so seamlessly that you don’t get the impression that there are really two parts to it. And the 3D glasses complete the total immersion.
Thank you, Mr. Cameron, for showing that a big Hollywood production does not have to suck!

We took my mom to see it. Understand, we don’t go out to watch movies. To avoid sticker shock, we attended the first matinee. I did splurge on a drink and a pretzel. Despite the movie being 2 hours and 40 minutes, I am amazed that I didn’t have to run to the bathroom once! There was never a lull in the movie to me. Yes, there were some sappy moments (I think I even teared up), but I thought the plot was significant. I’d even go watch it again!
